An introverted aromatic beauty emerges in this Kabinett of many colors. Smoky and stony with equal parts citrus, flintstone and fresh mint leaves. Initially shy on the palate, the flavors ping the tongue like fireflies on a summer night. Given time, a creamy, focused mosaic of ripe fruit and spice emerges. Capable of incredible surprises with a dash of flowers thrown in for good measure. Long, elegant finish. Rising up like an enormous steep mountain face, the Kanzemer Altenberg (VDP.GROSSE LAGE®) vineyard enjoys a perfect south-south-easterly orientation. Like all von Othegraven terroirs, it is characterised by Devon shale soil, which, in the Altenberg location, contains traces of iron-oxide that lend the ground a red sheen. This main terroir of the estate, which is mineral and warm at the same time, produces a noble, wholly self-contained wine of natural inner greatness. Serving Suggestions: The wine’s delicate structure will shine when paired with panko-breaded fish fillets, smoked trout or sushi, or vegetable tempura; the earthiness of French-lentil salad or the cooling spice of Japanese-styled cucumbers. Add a dash of vinegar; a crispy crunch of bread.
