Established in 1840 by brothers James and John Grant, the business prospered and in 1897 Glen Grant No. 2 Distillery was established across the road in order to meet the high demand for Glen Grant whiskey. Gordon & MacPhail has released some rare vintage single malts dating back to the 1950s. The bottlers Gordon and MacPhail describe this Glen Grant vintage as "rich and soothing - one to savour." It was distilled in 1961 and matured in first fill sherry casks. The nose is rich and full and retains an excellent balance. There are notes of sherried peels and dessert wines, particularly Sauternes, as well as sultanas, winter spice and hints of pepper. The palate is full and rich. There is a honeyed sweetness with barley sugar and notes of marmalade and winter spice. The finish is long and warming.
