Chris and Andrea Mullineux started their own estate in 2007, having met in 2004 in Champagne while they were both working vintages in France. And in the 15 years since, they’ve become one of the benchmark estates of South Africa, producing wines that dazzle with their purity, structure, and longevity. These are bottlings that can go toe-to-toe with anything we taste from around the world. The Mullineuxs call this 2018 Syrah, “one of our favourite vintages of Syrah to date.” Tasting it, we’re hard pushed to disagree. The grapes come from seven vineyard parcels in different parts of the Swartland: four planted in the stony Shale and Schist based soils of the Kasteelberg; two parcels of dry-land, bush vines grown in the decomposed Granite of the Paardeberg; and one on the rolling, iron-rich soils west of Malmesbury. The Mullineuxs increasingly farm these vineyards themselves, and they do so as sustainably as possible. Drink this stunning Syrah with richer food - or better yet, with a Braai.
