These wines are produced for us at Cantine Settesoli, the same winery where the Mandrarossa wines are made. Situated in southwestern Sicily, near the town of Menfi, the co-operative has 2,000 members who, between them, farm over 5,000 hectares of vineyard. These members are mixed farmers, with many of them also raising livestock or growing other crops, such as artichokes (the famous carciofi spinosi di Menfi, which are protected by the Slow Food organisation). The work Cantine Settesoli has done to raise the quality of viticulture has ensured a better income for the co-operative members, which, in turn, permits greater investment into the quality of their fruit. This investment pays dividends not only in the Mandrarossa label but also in the Casa Mia wines. The white is made from Catarratto, a variety that performs well in this area, where the proximity to the sea ensures a longer growing season. It is full yet fresh, with a zesty acidity on the palate. The red, a blend of equal parts of Alicante and Syrah, has good colour, fresh and spicy aromas on the nose and ripe, robust fruit on the palate. Both offer excellent value for money. The vintage began with heavy rain in autumn, which replenished water reserves in the soil. In spring, temperatures were below the seasonal average and rain that fell during flowering resulted in a decrease in the number of berries and a delay in harvesting of ten days.Summer was relatively cool, with some warmer days and colder nights, which helped the plants to grow lush, green and in excellent health, without having suffered water stress.Yields were 22% lower than usual but quality was high. The long maturation phase has allowed a good balance of sugars and acidity as well as aromatic complexity. Ruby red in colour, this wine opens with floral notes of violet and red fruit. On the palate, it is soft and round with a persistent finish.
