Product Details

Morandé was founded in 1996 by Pablo Morandé, and found immediate recognition both domestically and abroad. Morandé are true pioneers – they were the first family to develop the Casablanca D.O., recognising the fantastic potential of this cool-climate wine region. They also led the way in reviving old viticultural regions such as Maule and Itata, working with old dry-farmed bush vines and unconventional varieties such as Carignan, País and Cinsault. All of the wines are produced with grapes from Morandé’s own vineyards. Their winemaking philosophy is guided by seeking the right terroir for each grape variety, and with significant vineyard holdings they are well placed to achieve this.  The fruit comes from selected blocks of the San Bernardo estate in the Maipo Valley, which is famous for the production of very high quality red wines. The soils are a clay-loam mix with some gravel. The cool, dry climate gives the ideal conditions for well-structured red wines. The grapes were hand-picked into ten kilo baskets. The grapes were crushed and given 5 days’ cold maceration, then fermented at 26-28ºC with another 27-30 days on skins before going through natural malolactic fermentation. Eighty percent of the wine was aged in 2,000 and 4,000-litre French oak foudres for eighteen months, with the remainder maturing in barriques, with twenty-five percent new wood. A single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon of impeccable poise and pedigree, with focused cassis and black cherry fruit lent breadth and cedary complexity by well-judged oak. Firm tannin supports the natural juicy character giving a well-knit structure and excellent balance on the finish.
